What is a digital space and how does it work?
What is a digital space?
A digital space is a virtual environment that replicates a physical space online. Think of it as your permanent online location that's always available, similar to having an office or campus on the internet. Unlike traditional video calls where everyone is forced into one conversation, Cosmos creates a shared online space where people can be present together but connect only when they choose to.
How does it work?
When you join a Cosmos space, you're represented by an avatar that moves around just like you would in a real building. Your avatar has a square coverage area around it, which works like your personal bubble. When your coverage area overlaps with someone else's, you automatically see and hear each other—just like being close enough to chat in real life.

Area types
Cosmos spaces feature two main area types:
Spatial Areas
Areas where spatial video calling works—just like in real life. People close to each other can see and hear one another, while those further away cannot. This creates natural conversation dynamics where:
- Moving closer to someone starts a conversation
- Stepping away politely ends the interaction
- Groups can form and dissolve organically
When you need quick feedback, want to have an impromptu chat, or wish to collaborate fluidly without the formality of scheduled meetings, Spatial Areas are ideal.
Meeting Rooms
Meeting Rooms are like conference rooms or classrooms in a physical building, where everyone can see and hear each other, regardless of position.
- The entire room functions as a single video call (similar to Google Meet or Zoom)
- Perfect for planned meetings, presentations, and discussions where everyone needs to participate
- Can be used for client meetings, team standups, workshops, or private conversations
- Offer a focused environment without distractions from other conversations
Meeting Rooms provide structure when you need everyone's full attention or when discussing sensitive topics that require privacy.
